How is planked wall paneling built around a TV?

Signal & Stud editors · 15 Oct 2026 · sources listed below

Boards with a small reveal between them bring a relaxed, coastal line to a media wall. The joint is both the look and the place where seasonal movement goes.

What does a typical build look like?

Boards are fixed horizontally or vertically over a flat wall or strapping, with a consistent reveal. The screen and outlets are centred on a board or a joint so cut-outs look intentional.

What framing and blocking does it need?

Fastening lines that land on studs or blocking, and a separate solid landing for the TV bracket.

What substrate goes behind it?

Drywall or a sheathed wall, kept flat so the reveals stay even.

How heavy is it?

Depends on species and thickness; boards are light compared with stone, so ordinary framing is usually sufficient.

How does it behave in Florida humidity?

Solid boards follow the same moisture behavior as any wood:

Relative humidity at 70°FWood equilibrium moisture content (%)
30%6.2
40%7.7
50%9.2
60%11.0
70%13.1
80%16.0

Because a coating only slows that exchange, according to the Wood Handbook, reveals give each board room to expand and contract without buckling.

How is it finished and maintained?

Painted boards are the most common; sealing all faces and the end grain helps even out movement. Dust settles in horizontal reveals.

What does it pair well with?

Light stone or a white electric fireplace surround, open shelving, and a soundbar set on the screen’s center line.
