How are stone-look and porcelain slab media walls built?
Large-format panels give the uninterrupted, marble-like field many people picture behind a TV. Gauged porcelain panels make that possible without the thickness of quarried stone, but they demand a very flat wall.

What does a typical build look like?
Gauged porcelain panels are set in mortar on a prepared backing, with mechanical leveling clips at the joints. Custom Building Products’ TB60 bulletin explains that panels this large need special handling and installation.
| TB60 point | Figure |
|---|---|
| Gauged porcelain thickness | 3.5–6.5 mm (1/8"–1/4") |
| Largest panel sizes mentioned | 5' × 10' (1.5 m × 3 m) |
| Panel or slab definition | more than 1 square meter |
| Recommended flatness | no more than 1/8" in 10' and 1/16" in 2' |
| Abrupt irregularities | none greater than 1/32" |
| Lippage allowed by ANSI A108.19/20 | up to 1/32" |
| Panels 1 m² and larger | mechanical lippage control system required |

What framing and blocking does it need?
Straight studs and blocking that keep the face within the flatness tolerance above, plus solid blocking at the TV location so the bracket fastens to structure rather than relying on the panel.
What substrate goes behind it?
A backing that is flat and true. TB60 says TCNA surface tolerances for large format tile are acceptable and that preparation of the surface is the key issue with thin panels.
How heavy is it?
TB60 notes that thin gauged panels add very little height to an assembly. Weight per panel depends on size and thickness; the panel maker’s data sheet gives it.
How does it behave in Florida humidity?
The panel documents we read give no humidity limit for the porcelain itself. The parts that move are behind it: wood framing follows the moisture behavior on our wood page.
How is it finished and maintained?
Porcelain arrives finished, so care is mostly wiping. Joints are few on a slab wall, which is a large part of the appeal.
What does it pair well with?
Warm wood built-ins on either side or a linear electric fireplace below. Check the fireplace manual’s clearances on Planning the tech.
